"Why should there not be a patient confidence in the ultimate justice of the people?   Is there any better or equal hope in the world?" — Abraham Lincoln

Menu of Law & Order Issues

Here's what's hot on the Law & Order front:

S 1695 - The Patriot Oversight Restoration Act
Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
& other Patriot Act reform measures

When President Bush asked for sweeping authority to hunt down terrorists in 2001, Congress gave it to him.   Certain measures of it are set to expire this year.   Should we let them?   Should we repeal any other measures?   Or should we give law enforcement even greater powers?   Tell Congress what you think.

Here are other Law & Order issues we're considering.
Which one would you like to see next?

  • S 1431 / HR 2038 - Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act
    Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) &
    Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY)

In September, 2004, the provision of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act that bans semiautomatic and other assault weapons expires.   This bill renews that ban and also prohibits conversion kits and large capacity ammunition loading devices.

  • HR 3214 - Advancing Justice Through DNA Act
Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr. (R-WI)

This bill covers a variety of DNA issues, including the establishment of a central DNA database.   It also mandates that the backlog of testing in rape cases be processed promptly and assures that a convict has access to DNA testing which could prove his or her innocence.

  • Guantanamo Bay
Hundreds of "enemy combatants" are being held in this U.S. military prison without formal charges or access to an attorney.   The Supreme Court is currently considering a number of cases involving these prisoners' rights.

  • S 2329 - Crime Victim Rights Act
    Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ)

This measure, which passed the Senate and is now in the House, gives victims the right to be heard throughout the legal process.   Victims also have the right to be notified when the person convicted of the crime against them is up for parole or released from prison.   To accomplish this task, this bill allocates $11.3 million in 2005 and another $86 million through 2009.
The next Law & Order issue on Voter Votes should be:
1.   Assault Weapons Ban

2.   Advancing Justice Through DNA Act

3.   Guantanamo Bay

4.   Crime Victim Rights Act
